Bertram is an old narrow gauge engine who worked in a quarry on the far side of Sodor. He is known as the "Old Warrior" because of his bravery. Toby found him whilst watching over the quarry, and has since then befriended him. He now works at the restored mines, taking passengers to the fairground within.
Bertram only appeared in the fifth season episode "Toby's Discovery" with no dialogue, and was built using Duke's body with Smudger's face and painted dark brown. He is based on Palmerston from the Ffestiniog Railway.
According to Britt Allcroft, Bertram was supposed to be a tank engine, but the model crew made a mistake. It is assumed that Bertram worked the Mines with the Mid-Sodor Railway development, as the narration describes the mine had been worked by the 'little engines' but was run down.
