"Ulli! You seen a cheeky blue tank engine, numbered one?"
— Mainland Diesel #1 asking Ulli, Journey Beyond Sodor

  • Class: BR Class 08
  • Designer: British Railways
  • Builder: Crewe, Darlington, Derby, Doncaster, or Horwich Works
  • Built: sometime between 1952 and 1962
  • Configuration: 0-6-0DM

Ulli is a diesel shunter who lives and works on the Mainland at Bridlington Goods Yard, along with several other diesel shunters.

During the Great Railway Show, he was seen shunting trucks around the yard for the contestants.

In Journey Beyond Sodor, when James went back to Bridlington he asked one of the diesels if he'd seen Thomas. Both Ulli and the other said they had not seen him.

Ulli is based on a BR Class 08 diesel-electric shunter. Over seventy members of this class survive today in preservation, while around 100 remain in service on the national rail network. They were in fact the most successful shunting engines in the world, with 996 of them built. Diesel, Paxton, Sidney, 'Arry, Bert and The Mainland Diesels are also members of this class.

Ulli is painted in a livery similar to the EWS orange-red and yellow livery. He has a black and yellow hazard stripes painted on his fronts, white ladders, yellow counterweights and red buffers.
